Abel Koffeman
I am a PhD candidate at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) within the Institute for Chemical Neuroscience (iCNS). My research is part of a larger project that focuses on using artificial intelligence and computational methods to better understand the biological mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric disorders.
For my master's thesis, which I did in the same lab I'm now starting my PhD in, I developed an automated method of detecting and segmenting multiple sclerosis lesions from high resolution histopathology images.
I will continue working on integrating clinical, molecular, and neuropathological data from the human brain, using approaches including large language models, multi-omics analysis, and AI-based analysis of brain tissue. By connecting detailed clinical symptoms to molecular and pathological changes in the brain, the goal of the project is to better understand the biological basis and heterogeneity of psychiatric disorders, which can contribute to more precise approaches to diagnosis and treatment in the future.
