Bastiaan Lodder
My research focuses on mapping ultrastructural changes in the brain in psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders using electron microscopy (EM). My expertise lies primarily in the ultrastructural features of myelin sheaths and pathological changes. I am currently building an EM library of postmortem human brain tissue. Because the resolution of EM goes far beyond the reach of light microscopy, cellular structures can be visualized at nanoscale resolution, and EM provides an important complement to the molecular and transcriptomic findings for multiple work packages within the iCNS consortium. Ultimately, it might be possible to link ultrastructure to symptoms in donors with a psychiatric disorder, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or depression.
