Dr. Jörg Hamann
I trained as a molecular biologist specializing in immunology and received my PhD from Leipzig University in 1993 for expression cloning of the early activation antigen CD69. Shortly thereafter, I cloned and deorphanized the adhesion GPCR CD97, initiating my long-standing interest in adhesion GPCR biology. In 2012, I co-founded the Adhesion GPCR Consortium and, in 2015, I contributed with IUPHAR to establishing the unified ADGR nomenclature now used internationally.
As Principal Investigator at Amsterdam UMC and affiliate of the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience, I investigate tissue-resident T cells and macrophages in the human brain in health and neurological disease. Together with Joost Smolders, I led the first comprehensive characterization of human brain-resident memory T cells.
Since 2013, I have headed the Central Biobank at Amsterdam UMC, and in 2025, I became National Node Director of BBMRI.nl. As co-lead of iCNS WP1, I coordinate activities to broaden the psychiatric brain donor program at the Netherlands Brain Bank, providing deeply phenotyped brain tissue from well-characterized donors to support fundamental and translational psychiatric research within iCNS and the wider research community.
